Ahh - this painstakingly hand-sewn dress is the culmination of long term project to highlight the fine muslin produced in Bangladesh, imported and made into dresses for fashionable ladies in 17th century London. Although the materials were funded by Stepney Council, all participants/volunteers were unpaid. Anjum, Rehana and I (the Heba Women's Project Collective!) chose a lovely dress in the Museum of London collections to recreate. The garment, donated by Catherine Lucy, relative of female adventuress/eccentric
Lady Hester Stanhope, has a lovely serpentine trim and polka dot fabric. Very striking methinks!
All the Heritage project recreations are due to be exhibited Fall 2013 at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
